MERCEDES-BENZ REVEALS THEIR LATEST 2014 S-CLASS COUPE (9 PHOTOS)

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the production version of its S-class Coupé, which will make its debut at the Geneva motor show in March.

The S-class Coupé is a replacement for the CL, and will amost certainly use the drivetrains from the new S-class saloon, which include a 258bhp 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, a 455bhp 5.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol, and a 3.5-litre V6 petrol/electric hybrid. The car will makes its debut in production form at the Geneva motor show on March 4.

Like the S-class saloon with which it shares its platform, the Coupé uses an adaptive suspension system called Magic Body Control, which “reads” the road to improve ride comfort. However, the S-class Coupé builds on this with the addition of a “curve tilting” function which, upon sensing a bend in the road, leans the car into it, reducing the lateral acceleration acting upon its occupants.

Save for a more restrained treatment of the front end, the exterior styling is broadly similar to the concept car shown at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, and sets the S-class Coupé out as a very different model to the saloon, with a more aggressive, sporting appearance. Or, as Gorden Wagener, Vice President of Daimlar, modestly puts it: “Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor.”

This might also be one of the first cars where what's under the bonnet is not as interesting as what sits at the end of it: a full LED lighting system complemented by 47 Swarovski crystals (17 for the daytime running lights and 30 for the indicators). There are more LEDs at the back of the car, arranged in two rows across the broad rear panels.

The interior of the S-class Coupé has been toned down slightly from the concept version, but still looks distinct from other Mercedes models. At the centre is a two-part TFT screen, which incorporates the instruments and satnav/infotainment functions. This can be controlled via the optional touchpad, which is designed to function in the same way as the touchscreen of a smartphone, with different finger gestures used to access the various functions.

In addition to these screens, the S-class Coupé can be specified with a head-up display that places important information on the windscreen. Another neat piece of technology is Magic Sky Control, which switches the transparency of the panoramic roof from light to dark at the touch of a button.
